I'm Wick Six. I remember that is how I was addressed when I visited the editorial offices of KSU Press after my chapbook, Against the Simple, selected in 1994, was the sixth chapbook published in the series. At the time I won the award, I wasn't sure what it would mean to me.
What I have found is that having my chapbook published in the Wick poetry series includes me a large network of poets whose company I enjoy and whose work I respect very much. Plus I have had the opportunity to be a part of planning the 15th, 20th, and 25th Wick reunions.
Mostly, though, a Wick award came at a time in my career as a writer when I was changing directions, discovering the prose poem and working under the influence of Stein, Silliman, and others. Having my first book of those poems accepted was such an important validation for me.
