In the mid-1990s, my chapbook, The Lazarus Method, was chosen for inclusion in the Wick Poetry Chapbook series by Irene McKinney, a West Virginia poet whose excellent work made it a particular honor to be chosen. It was also an honor to be included among the Wick poets, which affirmed my at times ambivalent choice to become a writer. I have made my living as such for 25 years now, first as a publications editor and then as editor of a book review journal. The latter gave me the opportunity to write about the work of other fine poets, many Wick poets among them, and to also feature an essay, "The River Down Home" by Maggie Anderson, director of the Wick Poetry Center, on her particular affinity with poet James Wright, which became the first essay in the Ohioana Quarterly Ohio Legacy Series (www.ohioana.org/features/legacy/). I have continued to write poetry; my most recent poem "A Proper Raising" was chosen by Lynn Powell for first place in the Akron Art Museum's 2009 New Words Poetry Competition (www.akronartmuseum.org/calendar/details.php?unid=1275). I am so grateful to the Wick family for supporting this fine program and the excellent work it makes available under the names of Tom and Stan Wick.
