One of my most memorable Wick experiences occurred after I'd accepted an offer to intern as a reporter at one of Bob Wick's Arizona newspapers. One day, my assignment sent me on an underground mine tour with photographer Francis Wick (Bob's son) during monsoon season. Rain greeted us when we emerged from the mine, and we got soaked as we drove away in my borrowed Mustang convertible, whose broken top would not close. We laughed and listened to music the whole way back to the office.

The summer of 1999 was my introduction to journalism. I've written for newspapers ever since and have been a freelance writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for the past six years. I've learned focus, economy of word and other writing skills useful for any genre.

I was pleased to visit Kent and attend a round of the Wick Poetry Center's 25th anniversary events in November 2008. I enjoyed attending readings, panels and dinners; helping Alice Cone greet authors; and chatting with friends old and new. Later, I responded emotionally to a follow-up letter that said thanks for remaining "an active part of this ongoing work, our common lives."

Now living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and often expressing myself through music rather than words, I still feel connected to the people who share friendship and art through the Wick program.
